Blocking lost/stolen devices-
The increased use of mobile devices has led to a significant increase in theft and loss of the devices. The owner can use the IMEI number to prevent further usage. The owner should call their network service provider to inform them of the situation. The service provider can either block the phone from their network or notify other network providers.
Identifying model and origin of device-
The IMEI number consists of 15 digits. The initial 8 digits, also known as TAC, give clues about the device’s origin and model. The next 6 digits can identify the manufacturer.
Device tracking –
Owners can register for the Mobile Tracker service providers by using their mobile numbers. A notification is sent to the owner’s registered mobile number whenever the device is used on a different Sim Card.

In countries such as the UK, an operator can quickly transmit a message with IMEI number, to the Central Equipment Identity Register. This register then floats the message to all other network providers. Blacklisting devices takes place within 48 hours for all networks.
IMEI (International Mobile Station Equipment Identity), is a number that identifies legal devices using the GSM network. This 15-digit number (14 digits plus one check digit) is an important measure to reduce the chances of a stolen or lost mobile phone being used. The IMEI number can be found on the phone’s box or inside the battery compartment. To blacklist the phone, the owner can use the IMEI number. To do this, the owner must call the network provider to instruct them to cease all services to the phone.
The IMEI number only relates to the mobile device. It has no relationship with the user. Many countries have strict regulations that make it mandatory for manufacturers to produce devices with valid IMEI numbers. Although law-breakers may have found many ways to alter the IMEI number they are rarely allowed to do so due to strict regulatory compliances.
The IMEI number’s digits represent the model, origin, and serial numbers of the mobile device. The first eight digits are the Type Allocation Code. They define the model and origin. The manufacturer is defined by the six following digits. The last digit (check number) is calculated using the Luhn algorithm.
